Scene 1

Stage Directions (SD): Sam’s House - Mother, Father & Sam

Sam: Mummy, my breakfast!

Gokul: What? Haven’t had your breakfast yet? Your school van will be here any time.

Sam: Mummy didn't wake me up. I got up late.

SD: He plays with a ball. He bounces it and runs around the room.

Gokul: Stop it Sam. Don’t play with the ball here. Smita, why didn’t you wake him up early? Now he will be late. We have to listen to his teacher’s complaints.

SD: Sam stops playing with the ball, goes inside to get a kitten.

Bilvoa: I didn’t wake him! Is that my mistake? He takes hours to wake up and finish his morning routine. 20 minutes for just getting up from the bed, 10 minutes for brushing, ½ an hour for bathing....

SD: Sam is playing with a kitten.

Gokul: Sam, are you listening to us? Stop playing with that kitten. Where did you get it from?

Sam: Look at this kitten. She doesn’t have to brush. No need for bath and no school too. Mummy, why don’t you lick me all over and make me clean. No need for a bath then.

SD: Parents laugh. Sam sits down for breakfast.

Bilvoa: Wash your hands before eating your breakfast.

SD: Sam washes his hands and then returns to his breakfast place.

Gokul: Let me check your bag. Did you do your homework?

Bilvoa: I have to call him ten times for homework. He takes hours to write one page.

Gokul: Sam why are you like this? When will you grow up and be responsible?

Sam: Always complaining and complaining. My teacher said you have to say 6 good things first if you want to complain. Now come on. Start with the first one.

Bilvoa: I will do that in the evening then. Now come and finish your breakfast fast.

Sam: Oh..this dosa, the same old dosa everyday.

Bilvoa: This is not old. I just made it. Do you know how much time it takes to prepare for the dosa? Do you or your father help me in the kitchen?

Gokul: Oh am I the target now! It is all because of Sam. Sam, hold the glass properly. You will spill milk all over.

Bilvoa: Sam stop that. I don’t want more cleaning work now.

Sam: I am always the target. Both of you gang up on me. You always complain. You haven’t said the 6 good things about me too.

Gokul: Ok. Ok. That’s enough for now. Wear your shoes properly.

SD: Sam runs out with the school bag.

Bilvoa: Look he has left the id card here.

Gokul: Oh no! This boy is giving us hell.

SD: Father rushes out with the id card.

Bilvoa: Oh, something is burning in the kitchen.

Scene 2

SD: Play area - Four kids and Sam.

Preethi: Hey Sam, you are late again.

Sam: Don’t talk to me like that. You remind me of my mummy and daddy.

Preethi: In a bad mood, eh? Did you fight with them?

Sam: I never fight with anyone. They are after me all the time.

Preethi: Why what happened?

Sam: Nothing new. Everyday the same old story. Do this, don’t do this.. blah, blah, blah... I am tired of listening to all this.

Tanvi: Same in my house too. Every morning and every evening the same old advice. (mimicking the parents) Don’t watch TV. Don’t play with your friends. Do your homework.

Preethi: They enjoy scolding us. (mimicking the parents) No more toys for you. Behave yourself.

Paritosh: My mother is worse. She punished me. For fifteen days, no TV.

All: Oh no!

Sam: We have to do something about this.

Tanvi: Yes, we should. But what can we do?

Paritosh: Let’s think. Remember what the teacher said in the thinking class.

Preethi: mmm...CAF...Consider All Factors

Sam: No that tool will not work. We need the other tool, Rules.

Tanvi: Yes, we should make rules for our parents.

Preethi: Hey! I have an idea!

All: What? What? Tell us quickly.

Preethi: Remember? For the show your skills last month we had to do a Science Experiment. I tried many things. One was preparing a magic solution.

Paritosh: Really? A magic Solution?

Preethi: Yes, I have not tested it yet. But it will make the adults behave like children.

All: Hurray!

Sam: If they behave like children we can behave like mummy and daddy. We can tell them ‘do this’ and ‘don’t do this’.

Paritosh: Yes, that will be fun..

Tanvi: How do we make parents drink it?

Preethi: Today is our annual day. We are giving a glass of juice to all the parents. We will mix it with the juice.

All: Good idea!

Scene 3

3 mins

SD: Annual Day - Our stage will already be set for annual day, so no new preparation needed, some chairs in rows for parents to sit - Let’s show the parents entering the stage one by one and sitting on the chairs (about 6 -10).

Children are seen adding the solution from a small bottle to a big vessel and then taking the juice from that vessel in paper cups. They look at each other and smile and serve the drink to the parents. May be two people with two trays of 3 paper cups. Preethi is picking up the paper cups and giving it to others and showing by gesture to go and give it.

1` min - children are mixing the juice.

All: Welcome parents.

Preethi: Here is some juice for you.

1 min

SD: One parent is lying on the floor, kicking legs and creating a scene saying, ‘I want that toy.’

Another is standing on a chair, jumping from one chair to another.

A third one is biting the paper cup and drinking it without holding it in hand and walking about from one end of the stage to another.

The fourth and fifth one are fighting over a balloon. The balloon bursts and they start crying.

The sixth one is picking up a ball and bouncing it, while walking between others, hitting them sometimes.

Near each of the parent one child is present.

Preethi (to Monil) Don’t make a scene. Get up right now. I will punish you.

Tanvi (to Deekshita) Stop it. Get down from the chair.

Sam (to Gokul) Hold the cup properly. You are spilling juice all over.

Paritosh (to Bilvoa & Harsha) Stop fighting. Stop it immediately. No playing here. Go out and play.

SD: All the parents sit in their chairs. All the kids hold their head and express helplessness. Now the parents start laughing. Kids look at them with surprise.

2 min

Monil: Well how was that?

Preethi: Thank God! You are back as my daddy. The effect of the solution is gone.

Sam: I was scared it will never wear off. You will always remain like a child.

Deekshita: The magic solution did nothing to us. I overheard your conversation. I realized how you children feel about all this. I shared this with the other parents. We decided to play along with you.

All: (look at each other surprised and shocked) oh!

Monil: I wish I can be a kid forever.

Preethi: Oh, no daddy. I like you better like this. I can never manage you as a kid.

Tanvi: Sorry mummy I trouble you a lot. I will be better from now on.

Paritosh: I understand how you feel daddy.

Sam: Good it is all over. I was getting so angry. Now I know why our get angry with us.

All: Yes we feel the same way.

Gokul: We also did not like it when you scolded us. We should not be too harsh on you.

Bilvoa: Yes we now know how you feel. I will at least say three good things from now on.

All the parents: We love you kids.

Parents and children hug each other.

Sam: let’s celebrate.

SD: Music begins. Bubbles are blown on the stage. Everyone starts dancing.

All the characters hold hands and bow to the audience.
